The two hemispheres of the brain work together in emotional processing, states Paul Fedio, Ph.D., of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. The right side of the brain scans one's surroundings, while the left side of the brain interprets and analyzes the information. When the left side of the brain is damaged, the right side of the brain attempts to compensate, becomes over stimulated, pessimistic, tense and anxious. Through his research, Fedio found that subjects who suffered injury to the left hemisphere of the brain interpreted positive sounds as being negative.
