A good typing speed is 41-42 words per minute. This is the average typing speed of those tested, and although it is far below the record holders, it is still considered a good speed.
The fastest recorded English language typist was Stella Pajunas in 1946. She recorded 216 words per minute using an IBM electric typewriter. In 2005, Barbara Blackburn recorded 212 words per minute during a test using a Dvorak simplified keyboard. Despite the record set by these women, studies show that men have an average typing speed higher than women. This is odd because statistics reference that women enjoy practicing their typing skills more than men, and the top two record holders are women. However, men tend to focus on the task at hand and make less mistakes per minute than women.
