The 14th Dalai Lama was born as Lhamo Dondrub in 1935 in Amdo, Tibet. At the age of 15, he became the recognized leader of his people and of the Tibetan Buddhist religion. In 1959, he fled to India during the Tibetan uprising. He is known for his love of traveling the world and spreading his wisdom and thoughts on happiness, as well as for his campaigning for the well-being of the Tibetan people. He received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in 1989.
As of 2015, the 14th Dalai Lama is still in power, making him the longest-lived incumbent.
