The chain of good deeds teaches children about John the Baptist. For the activity, the children make a paper chain. On each chain, the children list the good deeds they completed during the previous week. Each week, the children make the chain longer. While making the chain, the children study John the Baptist and his call to perform righteous acts that help others.
Along with collecting cans, children can pack gift boxes for Operation Christmas Child or a similar charity. Other gift programs encourage children to shop for gifts for less-fortunate children and put them under a charity's Christmas tree. Alternatively, children can collect treats for animals, and take them to an animal shelter. Other children's Advent activities include picking up garbage in the local neighborhood or visiting a home for the elderly to hand out cards and cookies.
In order to tie religion into Advent activities, children can visit a local farm and talk about Jesus' humble beginnings in a barn, attend a staging of a live Nativity scene or set up a model Nativity scene. Children can write Jesus letters thanking him for coming to the Earth and for other good things in life. Children can also decorate crowns made out of paper and talk about the three wise men.Learn more about Christianity
