Some foods that may lower triglyceride levels are salmon, spinach, olive oil, beans, fresh fruits and grapes, suggests Dr. Oz. Making lifestyle changes that include eating foods that contain healthy fats like olive oil and are high in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon are some ways to avoid saturated fats, suggests the Mayo Clinic.

According to the American Heart Association, or AHA, eating fish, such as salmon, mackerel and albacore tuna, can decrease triglyceride levels and may also help with plaque formation due to atherosclerosis. Two servings of fish per week are recommended by the AHA.

Similarly, foods like spinach contain alpha-lipoic acid that may help to reduce triglyceride levels by nearly 60 percent, reports Dr Oz. In addition to eating foods that can lower triglyceride levels, a person may need to lose weight, lower his caloric intake, exercise on a regular basis, reduce cholesterol amounts in the diet to about 300 milligrams per day and limit foods that are high in sugar or are refined, states the Mayo Clinic.

Triglycerides are a type of lipid found in the blood. High levels of triglycerides can be a risk factor for heart disease, stroke and atherosclerosis, according to the Mayo Clinic. Although lifestyle changes that include healthy eating can help lower triglyceride levels, some people may need medications like statins and niacin to help them control these levels. Similarly, people with hypertension or diabetes, who also have high triglyceride levels, need to keep these condition under control as well.
