There are few risks with a diverticulitis diet, but weakness can occur if a liquid diet extends beyond a few days. Nutrients from food sources are essential, and transitioning back to a normal diet should occur as soon as the patient can tolerate it.
As high-fiber foods are reintroduced into the diet, patients should strive for 25 to 35 grams of fiber per day and drink plenty of water, according to WebMD. Fiber helps to soften stool, reducing pressure and allowing it to pass easily through the digestive tract. High-fiber foods include whole grains, beans, vegetables and fruits. A doctor may also prescribe a fiber supplement as needed.
