How Do You Fix Peeling Ceiling Paint?
To fix peeling ceiling paint, remove loose paint, apply patching material, sand the patch, prime the repairs and paint the ceiling. If patching the ceiling requires applying texture before painting, use a textured ceiling patch kit.
-
Remove the loose paint
Use a wide putty knife to scrape away any cracking or peeling paint. For cracked paint that remains attached, use sandpaper to smooth the surface.
-
Apply patching material
Apply a thin layer of patching material to the damaged area using a putty knife. Smooth the surface with the knife. If the patching material shrinks as it dries, sand the patch, and apply additional thin layers to build up the patch so it is even with the remainder of the ceiling.
-
Sand the patch
Use 220-grit sandpaper to smooth the patch and blend the area with the surrounding ceiling.
-
Remove the dust
Use a damp sponge to wipe away any dust you create while sanding the patch. Ensure the patch is thoroughly dry before proceeding.
-
Prime the ceiling
Paint the ceiling using drywall primer. Give the primer adequate time to dry before painting.
-
Paint the ceiling
Apply a thin coat of good-quality latex paint to the ceiling. Allow the paint to dry per the manufacturer’s directions before applying a second coat to complete the project.
