Football (American soccer) is the most popular sport in Poland. More than 400,000 Poland residents actively participate in the sport, with millions more taking part in recreational play at least occasionally.
Professional clubs in the country trace their roots to the early 1900s, with the rising popularity of the sport in Europe. Since it began play in 1921, the national team has made at least seven FIFA World Cup appearances and boasts a Silver Medal from the 1976 Olympics. The popularity of the sport reached new heights recently, when, along with Ukraine, it hosted the UEFA Euro 2012. It was the largest event in Poland's football history.
