Fr. John Corapi was a popular priest and speaker who used to give talks on subjects relating to the Catholic Faith. He was a priest of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity, ran Santa Cruz Media and was a favorite on the Eternal Word Television Network.
In 2011, Fr. Corapi's religious order formally accused him of substance abuse, sexual misconduct and breaking his vow of poverty. It asserted that he had sexual relations with a woman, an action which violates the vow of chastity that religious priests and brothers make at their profession. The order also purportedly found that Fr. Corapi had broken his vow of poverty by having in his possession over $1 million in such items as real estate, motor boats, a boat dock and a variety of vehicles.
As a result, the order commanded Fr. Corapi to withdraw from public ministry, preaching and teaching. Fr. Corapi continued to fight against the allegations, believing that some of his accusers were merely enemies wanting be rid of him. He also talked about the possibility of leaving the priesthood. The scandal divided many in the Catholic world, as some of Fr. Corapi's followers continued to believe in his innocence.
