What Is the F01 Fire Guard Test?

Those wishing to obtain the F-01 Citywide Fire Guard for Impairment Certificate of Fitness must complete the F01 Fireguard test at FDNY Headquarters. The test consists of multiple choice questions, and a passing score of 70 percent or higher required.

The test questions are related to Fire Guard requirements and duties in conducting fire watches when fire protection systems are not properly functioning. An understanding of building sprinkler and standpipe systems, fire alarm systems and fire extinguishers is essential. Fire guard patrol protocols, inspection logs and records, and fire department notification procedures are also covered on the test.

Fire Guard jobs are generally available in high-rise buildings, hotels and motels, marinas and boatyards, film studios and a number of other establishments. Many companies providing security services require individuals to possess the certificate before they are considered for employment.

A number of other related fitness certificates are offered upon successful completion of their respective exam. The F-02 certificate is unique to homeless shelters. F-03/F-04 certification is required to manage occupants in the case of fire or other emergency at places of assembly. F-07/W-07 certification enables persons to conduct drills in occupancies not requiring a Fire Safety Director, while F-60 certification is required at most construction sites.
