While the duties of a church usher vary depending on the church, in general an usher gets the church bulletin's ready, maintains supplies in the sanctuary and altar area, and welcomes the congregation. Other duties include providing directions to restrooms or the nursery and assisting the elderly.
Ushers also participate in the offering, count the offering and monitor the hallway for unexpected visitors after the offering to protect the money. Ushers also control the temperature in the sanctuary during the service, count the number of people in attendance and ensure that the church is secure following the service. Ushers also may provide emergency assistance when appropriate and help to keep the sidewalks clear in the winter.
