The major disadvantage of parallel circuits as compared to series circuits is that the power remains at the same voltage as the voltage of a single power source. Other disadvantages include the split of an energy source across the entire circuit, and lower resistance. Parallel circuits are those that have more than one output device or power source. For electricity to flow, they utilize more than one path.
In parallel circuits, the energy from the source is usually split across the entire circuit. In the end, there are varying currents flowing in the circuit. Therefore, where a constant current is desired throughout,
parallel circuits cannot be effectively used. Similarly, the resistance is lower in parallel circuits than in series circuits. Here, voltage is equalized on the entire circuit as branches are added. However, there are important advantages to parallel circuits. For example, the bulbs connected tend to have brighter light than those connected in series circuits. In addition, when one bulb is turned off, it does not affect the others. This system is therefore suitably used in homes to connect various appliances such as microwaves, refrigerators, heaters and television sets.This supplies each appliance with the full mains voltage, and a homeowner can turn on one appliance without necessarily turning on another.
