According to FIFA, the governing body for international soccer, the distance from the ground to the crossbar is 2.44 meters, and the distance between both goal posts is 7.32 meters. Varying sizes may be used for youth soccer and non-FIFA events.

In addition to regulating the measurements of the goal, FIFA also regulates the placement and materials that may be used for construction. The goal must be centered on the goal line equally between the corner flag posts. The goalposts and crossbar can only be made of an approved material, such as metal or wood. The two posts must be positioned directly on the goal line.
