What Are the Different Types of Skin Fungus?

The different types of skin fungus include ringworm, yeast infections, athlete’s foot and jock itch. These conditions occur when a person inhales fungi or when fungi lands on a person’s skin, as stated by the National Institutes of Health’s MedlinePlus. People who are using antibiotics and those with a poor immune response have a higher risk of getting fungal infections.

Also referred to as tinea pedis, athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that affects the foot. Its symptoms include redness, sores, peeling, itching and burning. There are different types of athlete’s foot, including moccasin, vesicular and interdigital, as stated by WebMD.

Jock itch is also referred to as tinea cruris, and it is usually caused by a fungus called tinea. Its symptoms including itching, chafing, rash, redness and flaking of the skin. This infection usually affects the inner thighs, buttocks and the genitals.

Ringworm is also called tinea corporis, and it is a fungal infection that can appear anywhere on the skin. It is usually a circular, red sore, and the outer side is raised than the inner part, as stated by WebMD.

Yeast infections are known as cutaneous candidiasis, and they are usually caused by a fungi called candida. They can occur anywhere on the skin, and their symptoms include redness, rash and itching.
