The five basic types of lines used in art and design are horizontal, vertical, diagonal, zig-zag and curved lines. Lines, which are one of the fundamental elements of art and design, convey different qualities depending on their appearances.
Lines are often used to divide an image or illustrate the physical boundaries of an object. For example, horizontal lines are used to represent the curve of the horizon in landscape portraits, while curved lines are used when drawing organic objects such as fruit or flowers. Lines also convey different emotions. For example, horizontal lines convey stillness and stability, while zig-zag or diagonal lines invoke intensity and excitement.
