What Is the Difference Between Nearsighted and Farsighted?
Nearsightedness makes distant objects appear blurry while farsightedness makes close objects appear blurry. Nearsightedness is known as myopia while farsightedness is known as hypermetropia or hyperopia, as noted by the Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute.
With normal eyesight, light focuses on the retina, resulting in clear vision. Nearsightedness occurs when light reflects onto the front of the retina, resulting in blurry distant objects, while closer objects remain clear. It often occurs at school age and progresses with age.
Farsightedness occurs when light reflects behind the retina, resulting in blurry close objects and clear distant objects. It often exists at birth, but some children outgrow the condition, according to the National Institutes of Health’s Medline Plus.
