Use a membership-management software program, put together an in-house, text-based directory with a desktop publishing program or hire a publisher to create a pictorial church directory. Keep cost, printing and time constraints in mind while planning a directory.
Membership-management programs are accessible to casual users. This lower costs when the work is done by church members. Congregants log in, upload family photos and update personal information at their leisure. Also, costs are lowered because members print their own directories as needed.
Use any word processing application to created text-based and pictorial directories. It is easiest to create a table with the number of columns and rows needed. Members’ photos are placed where they are needed, and the accompanying text goes wherever desired. Photographs are easily resized to fit the accompanying information, such as family names, addresses, and phone numbers and email addresses of those included.
Dedicated software packages also save time by allowing creators to include extra information, customize the look of the directory and add or delete entries at will.
Another time saver is to import photographs and allow the software to automatically resize them. It is also easy to add and delete members, shift information around and rework the look of the directory in its final form.
