There is no one correct way to pass the plate at church, according to Scripture Essay. The New Testament, in fact, contains no guidelines at all as to how contributions should be made.
In Mark 12:41 and Luke 21:2, for example, mention is made of a widow who casts her two mites into the treasury, notes Scripture Essay. This consisted of casting her coins into a trumpet-like opening of a chest, which would have been located around the area of the temple.
Because there is no source for one necessary method of giving, a plate can be passed or a box may be used, says Scripture Essay. It is the giving itself that is important, as is noted in Corinthians 9:7, where it says that "Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
