What Are Some Conflicts in “The Outsiders?”

Written by S.E. Hinton, “The Outsiders” is a novel that features the conflict between the socs and the greasers. The socs are the middle-class kids in town, which include cheerleaders and jocks, while the greasers live in poverty on the bad side of town.

The socs are the West-side rich kids, and the greasers are distinguished by the grease in their hair and the fact they live in the East-side ‘hood. Ponyboy, one of the greasers, realizes that appearance is the main reason the greasers get in trouble with society and the socs don’t. Regardless of who wins the conflicts between the two groups, society will still see the greasers as bad because of the way they look.
