What Color Are the Pope's Shoes?

While the traditional color for Papal shoes is a red or crimson color, Pope Francis, whose papacy began in 2013, broke this tradition and wore simple black shoes instead. This is in keeping with Francis' general preference for humbler garments, something that sets him apart from predecessors, who preferred more luxurious garments and accessories.

Francis's predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, wore red shoes and ornate garments and accessories, including an elaborate gold cross. This is in contrast with Francis' practice of wearing a simple iron cross that he received when he became an auxiliary bishop, and his practice of eschewing luxury fabrics such as velvet and fur.
