Cognitive skills are the mental abilities a person uses to acquire and use knowledge. School students and work trainees use cognitive skills for development. Reasoning, perception and knowledge are three primary cognitive skills. Collectively, these abilities allow someone to learn from facts, logic, opinions and feelings.
Educators use Bloom's Classification of Cognitive Skills to plan classroom learning strategies and formats. Bloom indicated that cognition begins with basic understanding and comprehension of a topic or subject matter. A person then strengthens awareness of how the learning applies in real-world situations through application and analysis. Through synthesis and evaluation, learners begin to see how the information learned works in a particular industry or field.
