Where Do Cicadas Live?

Cicadas can be found all around the world and are known to live on every continent except Antarctica. There are more than 720 species of cicadas in North America and more than 2,000 species worldwide.

Cicadas are well-known for the unique sound the males of the species make. The sound is produced by the cicadas’ flexing organs found in the abdomen called the tymbals. The organs function much like drums, creating the sound often referred to as the cicada’s song. The sound of the song depends on the cicada species.
