What Do Christians Do on the Second Sunday of Advent?

Many Christians focus on love when celebrating the second Sunday in Advent, and worshippers light the second Advent candle, which is purple. Others use the second Sunday to contemplate themes of hope.

Those attending Advent services can expect to sing songs with themes of love or hope, to consider readings from the Psalms and Gospels on these themes and, likely, to hear a homily or sermon on the topic.

Each week of Advent has a theme. The first Sunday is devoted to hope or expectation, depending on the congregation's preference. The second is focused on love or hope, the third on joy and the fourth on peace or purity.

Advent wreaths with candles for each week are a major part of the Advent celebration. The first three weeks' candles are purple, and the final week's is pink.
