The primary reason that the check engine light illuminates in a Dodge Ram truck is a loose gas cap. If this kind of a warning is ignored, it can lead to serious damage that will be expensive to repair.
If the gas cap has been tightened and the check engine light remains illuminated, then the car should be taken to a safe place for further examination. The other dashboard gauges should be checked and the vehicle should be inspected for signs of problems, such as overheating of the engine, low oil pressure, low oil level and poor condition of the lights.
