Use peppermint oil to rid an area of mice by putting a few drops of the essential oil on cotton balls and spreading them around the area where you spot the pests. Do not use peppermint-scented products, such as extracts, as they do not provide sufficient protection.
Peppermint oil repels mice and other pests, including spiders. In order to be effective, refresh the cotton balls when the peppermint smell dissipates. For a spray product, mix 2 teaspoons of peppermint essential oil with 1 cup of water. Add a few drops of dish detergent to help keep the oil in suspension. Place the mixture in a household sprayer and apply in the areas where there is mouse activity. Refresh the spray every couple of weeks until mouse activity stops.
Make the area less appealing to mice by keeping garbage in sealed containers, both inside and outside the home. Seal the food you store in the cupboards in plastic containers so it is more difficult for mice to access it. Keep crumbs swept up from the floor.
Inspect the home for any access points. Fill small holes with steel wool or spray foam sealant. Caulk any cracks around doors, and make sure the door meets the threshold. Eliminating access points helps to keep mice outside.
