Can You Put a Refrigerator on Carpet?
Last Updated Apr 10, 2020 2:01:20 AM ET

Placing a refrigerator on carpet is not recommended. Carpeting obstructs the flow of air to the condenser, located at the bottom of the refrigerator. Carpets also retain heat, which prevents the condenser and compressor from cooling properly and causes the compressor to overwork.
A compressor consumes more energy and is more likely to break down when it runs hot. Also, the heat from the compressor may cause the carpet to fade. It is recommended to place the refrigerator on a flat, even surface, such as a tiled floor. This may require placing a solid wooden board or a piece of vinyl or linoleum flooring between the refrigerator and the carpet.
