Michael Savage began reaching a radio audience in 1994, initially subbing for liberal host Ray Taliaferro on San Francisco station KGO. Savage used the slogan “To the right of Rush and to the left of God” to illustrate his largely conservative views. He got his own show during afternoon drive-time in 1995. By 2006, he had the third-most-heard radio broadcast in the United States with eight to 10 million listeners per week. As of 2015, Savage has a long-term contract agreement with Westwood One radio stations.

Michael Savage considers himself an independent and says that he does not fit a stereotype. However, his views are largely conservative and he consistently criticizes liberal activism, liberal bias in the media and big government. Proponents of feminism and immigration and equality groups such as GLAAD and FAIR often criticize Savage for his views and ideas.
