The websites of the Cult Education Institute and the International Cultic Studies Association provide lists of groups that some consider cults. The Cult Education Institute freely offers lists of controversial groups and information about them. The International Cultic Studies Association list is free, but more information requires paid membership.
The definition of "cult" varies considerably. Both the Cult Education Institute and the International Cultic Studies Association decline to apply the term themselves to specific groups. They instead aim to offer information about controversial groups, including those others have labeled cults.
The Cult Education Institute lists groups in categories such as Bible-based, commercial/business, political, New Age and hate groups. For non-members, the International Cultic Studies Association lists only the names of groups about which it has information, although, as of May 2015, temporary access to its online library is available in exchange for completion of a survey.
