The African Methodist Episcopal Church, which traces its history back to the Free African Society in 1787, currently has churches in 39 countries on five continents. The church also runs higher educational institutions in several areas in North America and Africa, including Atlanta, Georgia; Columbia, South Carolina; Wilberforce, Ohio; South Africa, and Liberia. A crew of 21 active bishops and nine General Officers guide the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
