Can You Lay a Freezer on Its Side?
Last Updated Mar 31, 2020 11:03:22 AM ET

A freezer can lie on its side during transport, but it then must be returned to an upright position for at least 30 minutes before being plugged back into an outlet. This will allow the oil to drain back to the compressor. Older freezers may require more time.
When the freezer is placed on its side, the edge containing the hinges should be on top to prevent the door from swinging open. Any glass shelves should be removed, and the door should be secured to protect the hinges. Once the freezer is relocated and plugged back in, it may take a few minutes for the thermostat to adjust to the new environment.
