How Can I Kill Weeds in My Driveway?

Weeds in driveway cracks can be naturally eradicated by physically removing the roots or by pouring hot water over the cracks. Spraying the affected area with a homemade herbicide solution consisting of vinegar, salt and dish detergent can also help to kill live weeds. Once the weeds are killed, removing the roots and adding organic fillers such as mulch to the spaces or cracks can help prevent regrowth.

Weed growth is also hindered by sprinkling baking soda or borax into driveway and sidewalk cracks. The powder creates an unbalanced environment and prevents new growth. Pouring undiluted household bleach directly onto driveway weeds helps to kill current growth and prevent additional weed growth, but it is important to pour the bleach carefully to prevent excess liquid from splashing onto surrounding grass.

Another household weed remedy consists of 1 ounce of vodka, 2 cups of water and 2 drops of liquid dish detergent. The solution should be sprayed onto live weeds during peak sunlight hours. The heat from the sun helps the alcohol break down the weeds’ protective layers, which causes the weeds to become dehydrated and die off. The vodka solution only works on weeds in direct sunlight and is not an efficient treatment for shaded areas.
