Consuming alcohol shortly after taking ibuprofen, such as Advil, is not recommended, according to Everyday Health. While generally considered safe, combining the two poses a risk of certain complications. Alcohol irritates the stomach's lining, and combined with ibuprofen, can lead to stomach and intestinal irritation.
Ibuprofen belongs to a family of drugs called NSAIDs, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Taking these types of drugs can lead to serious gastrointestinal problems, such as bleeding and ulcers, especially in combination with alcohol, says Everyday Health.
Alcohol can also cause drowsiness, sleepiness or lightheadedness, and consuming alcohol while taking medicines can intensify alcohol's effects, says the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. It may be more difficult to focus on certain tasks or perform basic mechanical skills.
