What Does the Bible Say God Is Like?

The Bible describes God as the all powerful, majestic, sovereign creator of the universe. Genesis 1:1-31 describes the creation process while Colossians 1:16 summarizes it by mentioning that all things including heaven and earth whether visible or invisible were made by him. Psalm 36:5-7 further describes God as loving, righteous, protective and just.

God is a spirit according to John 4:24, and no one can see his face as recorded in Exodus 33:20. The Bible goes on to describe God in character as compassionate and patient. 1 John 4:8 equates God to love without which one cannot know him. The verses in Lamentations 3:21-23 illustrate God as full of compassion and never failing. His patience and faithfulness last up to a thousand generations as recorded in Deuteronomy 7:9-10. In 2 Peter 3:9, God keeps his word and fulfills the promises he makes.

God's perfection is portrayed in Deuteronomy 32:4 where he remains upright and does no wrong. In Genesis 22:8, Abraham describes God as a provider. He is a deliverer according to 1 John 4:14, where he sent his Son as a savior of the world. 1 Timothy 2:3-4 describes God as knowledge and truth through his salvation plan for all humanity. In Romans 3:22 and 25, God is forgiving but is prepared to judge and condemn people for their sins.

In Nahum 1:2-7, God is characterized as jealous and avenging. His invisible qualities, eternal and divine in nature, and the magnitude of his anger and wrath are recorded in Romans 1:18-20 and 2 Thessalonians 1:6-9.
