According to the Mayo Clinic, betamethasone valerate is a topical steroid available as a cream, lotion and ointment used to treat the symptoms of various common skin irritations, such as redness, itching and swelling. It is also available as a foam, and used to treat scalp irritation.
According to DailyMed, betamethasone valerate should be applied to affected skin areas between one to three times a day. If skin problems are caused by a bacterial or fungal infection, the appropriate medications to treat the infection should also be taken. Since betamethasone is a corticosteroid, patients should take care to report any side effects to their doctor.
