What Benefits Do Men Get From Eating Celery?

Some health benefits of celery for men include lowering blood pressure and cancer prevention, according to Medical News Today. Celery may also improve digestion, prevent age-related vision loss and relieve pain.

In men, high blood pressure can lead to erectile dysfunction, according to WebMD. Left untreated, high blood pressure can also damage the heart, kidneys, arteries and brain, writes the Mayo Clinic. Celery contains a phytochemical called phthalide that relaxes the tissues of the arterial walls to improve blood flow and lower blood pressure, states Cleveland Clinic. Celery is also low in sodium and contains a wealth of nutrients, such as fiber, magnesium and potassium, that combat high blood pressure. Four stalks, or 1 cup of chopped celery, daily can help control blood pressure.

Celery also contains a flavanoid called luteolin, which may possess anti-carcinogenic properties, states Medical News Today. Research suggests that luteolin works symbiotically with other cancer therapies to kill cancer cells.

Celery is relatively rich in dietary fiber, providing 1.6 grams of fiber per 100 grams of stalk, according to Medical News Today. Men under 50 should have 38 grams of fiber daily, writes WebMD, and snacking on celery can help meet this daily goal. Fiber helps the digestive system function properly by improving regularity, boosting good bacteria, controlling hunger and protecting against illness.
