Evidence of paranormal activity in Alcatraz, as well as the island on which it's located, suggests that it may be haunted. It has been insinuated that inmates were tortured at the prison and their souls now haunt the grounds, with ghost hunters reporting "strangeness" in certain parts.
A plethora of claims regarding paranormal activity at Alcatraz describe sightings of ghosts of prisoners or military personnel. Guards of the prison claim to have smelled smoke without finding fire. Some claim to have heard banjo music in different areas of the prison, which some believe to be the ghost of Al Capone, who was allowed to play the banjo during recreation time while imprisoned at Alcatraz late in his life.
