Akshay Kumar is an Indian actor and producer. He began his career as an action movie star but has since expanded to dramatic and comedic roles. As of 2014, he has starred in more than 100 Hindi films.
After completing college in Mumbai and earning a black belt in tae kwon do, Kumar moved to Thailand and learned muay Thai while working in restaurants. After returning to India, he became a martial arts teacher but branched off into modeling and acting. His first film role was in 1987s "Aaj" in which he played a minor role as a martial arts instructor. He got his first lead role in 1991 in the film "Saugandh." Throughout the 1990s, he starred in a large number of action movies, most notably the "Khiladi" series. He continued his action work throughout the rest of his acting career and received acclaim for performing a number of dangerous stunts. After 2000, he also branched out into a wider range of roles. As of 2014, he is still working as an actor, as well as producing films.
Kumar has been awarded the Padma Shri by the government of India, as well as an honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of Windsor for his contributions to Indian cinema.
