Afro Sheen is a hair care product that was created and produced by a chemist named George E. Johnson in Chicago during the 1960s. The product was designed for and geared towards black men and women.
In addition to Afro Sheen, Johnson created and sold other hair care products. In 1954, before Afro Sheen, he created a product called Ultra Wave. This was for African American men and was the first produced by Johnson. Later, in 1957, he designed and produced one for black women called Ultra Sheen. By 1971, Johnson's company was the largest African American-owned manufacturing company in the United States and the first to make the American Stock Exchange list.
