In education, self-assessment allows students to identify goals and obstacles to enable teachers to deliver customized instruction, according to the University of North Carolina. In organizations, self-assessment allows employees and the organization to identify short-term and long-term goals, measurable objectives and resources, according to the National Center for Cultural Competence.

Another primary benefit of educational self-assessment is that students think about their own motives and develop positive forward-looking plans, reports UNC. By identifying goals, self-assessors can also collaborate with their teachers and parents to focus on effective learning strategies. Teachers can use the information from self-assessment and their teaching expertise to build an effective educational plan. Teachers can also take the collective results of student self-assessments to structure the most beneficial classroom structure and activities.

In organizations, self-assessment helps the company identify how well it is currently meeting the needs of its primary target audience, states the National Center for Cultural Competence. Identifying deficiencies or areas for improvement contributes to the development of the most impacting short-term and long-term goals. The organization and workers can then form partnerships and find resources that contribute. Company leaders can also allocate financial budgets to help. A strategic plan for goal achievements and measurement of progress increases opportunities for ongoing organizational development.
