The ADA requires handicap vertical grab bars for water closets serving adults to be installed in a horizontal position 33 to 36 inches above the floor. This is in accordance with the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
There is an exception to this requirement for water closets serving children ages 3 through 12. The grab bars for children's use are to be installed in a horizontal position 18 inches minimum and 27 inches maximum above the floor, depending on the child's age, explains the U.S. Department of Justice. Bathtubs also have a requirement of having two grab bars installed on the back wall, one located 8 to 10 inches above the rim of the bathtub and one located 33 to 36 inches above the floor. Bathtubs with permanent seats must have a grab bar on the control end wall, while bathtubs without permanent seats must have a control end wall grab bar and a head end wall grab bar.
