Concrete that is designated as 3,000 pounds of pressure per square inch is commonly used for residential driveways and basement slabs. This concrete is not considered to be high strength but is poured to carry a compressive strength of 3,000 pounds of pressure per square inch after 28 days.
Conventional concrete in general has a strength less than 7,000 pounds per square inch. Concrete that has a strength between 7,000 and 14,500 pounds per square inch is referred to as high-strength concrete and is used for large-scale industrial and commercial projects. Bridges typically use concrete beams of a strength of 10,000 pounds per square inch to minimize the number of spans required.
