The 1960 edition of the Reina Valera Bible by the American Bible Society is the most commonly used edition in the Spanish-speaking world. There were two other editions in the last century, in 1909 and 1978, but none since.
Spanish-speaking members of the Evangelical community consider the Reina Valera Bible authoritative. Some think of the 1909 edition as the very word of God. The original Spanish translation of the Greek and Hebrew Scriptures by Reina and the subsequent revision by Valera was contemporaneous with and influential upon the famous English translation authorized by King James. Reina and Valera, however, had no such royal protection and were pursued by the Inquisition all their lives.
