It works, sort of. When the heater does kick on it works really well and doesn't pay any attention to the thermostat. If I have it set at 72 degrees it gets much hotter than that and keeps going until I turn it off. I was told by friend to adjust the dial in the inside of thermostat. Well I did that and when it does turn on it only goes for a little bit and doesn't come back on.

I suspect the heater core isn't flowing, you may need to take a garden hose and take both heater hoses off, and flush in both directions to clean the heater core. flush in both directions until you get clean water flow.
