In my experience hawks are most active early AM to mid morning then again in the late afternoon during the summer. During cooler weather they will hunt all day although most attacks have been in the early AM. They are opportunistic and flexible in their hunting and have the ability to adapt.

I work at a raptor hospital. Owls hunt at night and Hawks hunt days. This is hard to believe but we found a nest with a pair of hawks AND owls in it. The hawks watched the owls babies at night and the owls watched the hawks during the day. But I do not think this is normal. It is normal for a baby owl to fall out of the nest.
