I have a 40 thousands over bore, need to buy a bore gauge to measure to make sure the machine shop did their job correct, which I do not trust them and so I have peace of mind. If the gap is too small, the ends of the ring may collide which can lead to the ring breaking, scoring the bore, and eventually lead to complete breakdown. However, piston rings can be made from a wide variety of irons and steels with very different coefficients of expansion. So, a slight variation in the gap is acceptable.


To check the gap, the ring should be placed into the bore (without the piston) and squared up so that it’s level, using a ring-squaring tool. The cylinder bore must be honed to the final size before ring gap can be checked. Once the ring is in the bore, use a feeler gauge to check the gap.
