Unix-like systems usually name this loopback interface lo or lo0. Various Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards reserve the IPv4 address block, in CIDR notation and the IPv6 address ::1/128 for this purpose. The most common IPv4 address used is

Loopback address is a special IP number ( that is designated for the software loopback interface of a machine. The loopback interface has no hardware associated with it, and it is not physically connected to a network. The loopback interface allows IT professionals to test IP software ...

A loopback address is a type of IP address that is used to test the communication or transportation medium on a local network card and/or for testing network applications. Data packets sent on a loopback address are re-routed back to the orginating node without any alteration or modification.

Many years later, in May 2005, the IETF defined a formal standard in RFC 3927, entitled Dynamic Configuration of IPv4 Link-Local Addresses. Loopback. The class A network (classless network is reserved for loopback. IP packets whose source addresses belong to this network should never appear outside a host.

The design of the IPv6 address space differs significantly from IPv4. The primary reason for subnetting in IPv4 is to improve efficiency in the utilization of the relatively small address space ...

Thanks for your responses. As I studied in other places, it reinforces the idea that t he IPv6 loopback address cannot be assigned to a physical interface.::1 just works the same way as in IPv4. Pinging a loopback interface (virtual) is a means to confirm that the ipv4 or ipv6 protocol software is working as expected.

The Wikipedia article on loopback puts it better than I could:. The term loopback (sometimes spelled loop-back) is generally used to describe methods or procedures of routing electronic signals, digital data streams, or other flows of items, from their originating facility quickly back to the same source entity without intentional processing or modification.

In IPv4, the loopback address is In IPv6 it is ::1. Simplified header format. IPv6 has a fixed length header, which does not include most of the options an IPv4 header can include.

In the resource monitor, I notice that the multiple IPv4 loopback belongs to server_eventlog.exe and server_runtime.exe. We may stop the two processes to see if it could reduce IPv4 loopbacks and solve the issue. Besides, it seems that the server_runtime.exe is a third-party software, if you are running third-party software, we may close it and ...
