Self-etching primer frequently comes in a gray color, similar to other primer paint. The tell-tale feature will be on the description of the paint container, specifically identifying the self-etching feature included in the paint. The most common paint type comes in a spray can version, which is the easiest to apply.
Acid and self etch are basically the same stuff. Neither will prevent rust if stored in a place with any humidity. Also some types of primers and finish can't be sprayed directly over the etch primers. I've had best results with cleaning the bare metal parts with "grease and wax" remover and spraying on a few coats of PPG epoxy primer.
Self-etching primer adheres to tin-plated steel really well and it dries to a somewhat rough finish that makes it easy for the top coat to grab onto. A note about self-etching primer and aluminum. Aluminum is especially difficult to paint. You need to use self-etching primer to paint aluminum, but prep work is especially important.
The etching primers I have also contain zinc. How much I don't know. I do know that on slightly rustly material, a light sanding, followed by a washdown with navel jelly (put it on with scrubbing pad, let it sit for 1/2hr or so) and then a wash down (again with scotch bright pad) followed by two coats of etching primer (first one more of a misting, second one complete) followed by duplicolor ....
Primer surfacer should not be applied directly to bare metal. In this video, I will discuss the three primers and let you decide which one you prefer. Mixing Lids and Mixing Cups Information
Phosphoric acid ester formula promotes paint adhesion to difficult substrates, like galvanized steel and aluminum. Ideal for rub throughs in primer prior to application of color and new bare metal panels. Etch and prime bare metal in one step Flat fan high atomization nozzle offers a large fan pattern and excellent coverage Creates an anti-corrosive barrier that prevents steel from rusting Can ...
Self etching primer contains a mild acid that actually etches the bare metal to create a superior bond between the primer and the metal. Once the area is coated in self etching primer more traditional primers can be used to build out the surface.
1K ready to spray phosphoric acid ester formula promotes paint adhesion to difficult substrates, like galvanized steel and aluminum. Ideal for rub throughs in primer prior to application of color and on new bare metal panels. Etch and prime bare metal in one step Creates an anti-corrosive barrier that prevents steel from rusting Can be directly topcoated - no sanding required Available in ...
Etch Primer is a paint that is designed to physically bond itself to the substrate to which it is applied. This is achieved by combining an acid with the paint so that the acid microscopically etches the surface of the substrate, thus forming a physical and chemical bond between the two.
Rust-Oleum Automotive Self Etching Primer promotes maximum adhesion and smoothness of the top coat on bare metal, aluminum and fiberglass surfaces. Etches and primes in 1 easy step. Rust preventive for a long-lasting finish. Oil-based formula can be cleaned up easily using mineral spirits; Etches and primes in 1 easy step ...
