Classical elements typically refer to the concepts, rejected by modern science, in ancient Greece of earth, water, air, fire, and (later) aether, which were proposed to explain the nature and complexity of all matter in terms of simpler substances.
In ancient times, considerable note was made of understanding the elements, for these were considered the building bricks of the Universe, and hence many believed that the four elements were also part of the basic structure of themselves. The Wise Beings of those times saw themselves as a reflection of the universe.
Before people discovered the atomic elements, they hypothesized the existence of other elements that, as they thought, comprised the world around them. There were the classical elements: Earth, Fire, Water, Air, and often a fifth element (not Heart).
The Five Elements Symbolism and Meaning. It’s elemental! The nature of symbolic languages is that they must, of need, touch on all corners of creation and bind life into a framework. The word symbolism actually comes from two Greek terms that rather unpretentiously means “throw together.”
Everything in the universe is composed of the Four Elements, in varying proportions and amounts. The elemental composition of a substance determines its particular nature and attributes, properties and actions. The Four Elements are Fire, Air, Earth, and Water. We can see them as embodying the four basic states of matter:
The number of traditional elements in medieval alchemy varies from 4, 5 or 8. The first four are always found. The fifth, aether, is important in some traditions.

In many modern-day Pagan belief systems, there is a good deal of focus on the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water. A few traditions of Wicca also include a fifth element, which is spirit or self, but that is not universal among all Pagan paths.
