With the coming shutdown of CDMA (3G) I’m getting conflicting information. I understand voice service will be shut down on December 31, 2020. It’s important I get a clear answer to this question as we have a dozen of 3G modems used in remote IoT applications.

I came accross some news that Verizon is shutting down its CDMA network. There are conflicting information about this topic. As far as I know, Verizon still supports current subscribers with CDMA phones, but new customers cannot activate CDMA phones. I hope someone will help me answer these question...

CDMA shutdown is not imminent. I believe the plan is for the switchover on Jan 1, 2020. I believe the rumor your father-in-law is being told is not true. The CDMA flip phone will continue working for another few years . The Samsung SIII you mention will not work on Verizon.

Went on my PC for this one since I knew I needed to be organized on making my full in-depth of the CDMA Shutdown that Verizon Wireless has scheduled for a while now, and the actual date is listed as December 31, 2019.

As far as I know there is no delay in CDMA shutdown for general / public usage. But you should remember that CDMA network of Verizon may/will still be available for some corporate customers and IOT devices for another year or two.
