Solid rivets are some of the most popular mechanical fasteners. Although various types of rivets are available, the solid types are the oldest and most reliable. For this reason, they are widely used where safety is of paramount importance. They can be installed through various methods which ...

Solid rivets are one of the oldest and most reliable types of fasteners, having been found in archaeological findings dating back to the Bronze Age.Solid rivets consist simply of a shaft and head that are deformed with a hammer or rivet gun.A rivet compression or crimping tool can also deform this type of rivet.

Blind rivets are named so because they can be installed without access to the back side of the item being riveted. They are composed of the rivet (green) and an integrated mandrel (orange) How blind rivets work. Blind rivets are installed in a tight hole that passes through the materials being riveted (Step 1 & 2).

The best known type of rivet, the hot rivet, provides the strongest joints. In this process, glowing hot rivets are fed through precisely-drilled holes where the unformed end is hammered to close the joint. As the rivet cools, it contracts and squeezes the joint tightly together.

Types of rivet. There are two basic types of rivet — solid and blind. Blind rivets, require no hammering and may be fixed from one side of the work only. Solid rivets, which can be used for a wide range of jobs, come with several head shapes.

Some rivet types, particularly heavy structural types, require that the one end of the rivet be peened, or hammered, into shape once the rivet is in place. Lighter rivets such as blind rivets are set, mostly by hand, using a special tool. Rivets are often used as decorative elements and may be made of metals such as brass or copper.

Nail-head rivets and decorative rivets work best on metal. To use this type of rivet with leather, place washers/spacers between the leather and the rivet heads (both sides) to hold the rivets in place. Otherwise, the small heads on these rivets tend to pull right through pliable materials like leather.

These rivets are used widely in aircraft industries, shipping industries and in many electronics industries. The main advantage of these rivets that they have the fastest rate of installation among all fasteners. One more benefit is that this can be install from the single side. A blind rivet is used when it is impossible to seen rivet tail.

In this video, one of our resident fastener specialists talks about the types of (blind) pop rivets and the materials they are available in. The specialist explains the differences between each ...

How Do Rivets Work? Rivets are metal tubes that work by connecting two pieces of fabric or metal together through a hole and holding them together after the ends of the rivet are flattened. Rivets fasten diverse items from denim jeans to steel girders.
